"Forgive me but the day I start trusting him is the day I would have sold my soul."
That is what Sayid said to Locke about Ben when they were in the Barracks after Locke took Sayid prisoner. Now that we know that Sayid does eventually trust Ben... enough to kill for him; Does that mean that Sayid "sells his soul" eventually? And who is it that you sell your soul to? Usually, the devil. Does that mean that Ben is the devil? Since his main strength is that he can manipulate people with his words, like the devil does in the Bible, it would make a lot of sense...
Why does the bad guy have to have such a great name?

Good V. Bad
Are the 'rescue' team good or bad?
Are the 'others' good or bad?
Ben?
Locke?
Rousseau?
It's getting difficult to tell....
Something interesting to me is the fact that John Locke is also the name of a 17th century political philosopher., often referred to as the "philospher of freedom."
JL the philosopher worked closely with Anthony Cooper, a politician (also JL father's name in Lost) and helped to save his life from a liver infection (As JL saved his father with his kidney).
Jean -Jaques Rousseau is also the name of an influential 18th Century Philospher, with ideas similar to Lockes. Rousseau believed that people were born 'good' and that society and experiences and teaching are what corrupt people.
Both Lockes & Rousseau's political writings influenced the French (& American) Revolution.
So, I guess it all depends which side you are on when it comes to figuring out who is "good" and who is "bad".
In the end, I believe that everyone is good and believes that they are doing what is right and are doing what they feel is necessary for survival.
Kinda like real life.

Papa Don't Preach
All of the main characters seem to have major daddy issues, as noted by one of the others when he tells Locke to hit on a younger woman :
I'm sure there are others that have escaped me. Can anyone think of any I missed?
"She's looking for a daddy, same as everyone here."
- John Locke's biological father reconnected with him as an adult, because he needed his kidney. After he got what he wanted, he abandoned him all over again. Locke's father pushed him out of a window which left him paralyzed and in a wheel chair.
- Sawyer's father killed his mother in front of him when he was a child.
- Jack stood up to his father when he operated on a patient under the influence of alcohol. The patient died, Jack didn't cover and his father lost his license as a result.
- Jin is ashamed of his father's profession as a fisherman.
- Sun's father is disappointed that she fell in love and married a fisherman's son and offers Jin a job at his corrupt company.
- Walt was raised by his step father and never knew Michael until his mother died. His Step father gave him up to Michael.
- Claire's father is Christian Shephard (Jack's father), but she never knew that he had another family.
- Kate murdered her abusive step father , who turned out to be her biological father.
- Ben's father blamed him for his mothers death and abused & neglected him. Ben killed his father.
I'm sure there are others that have escaped me. Can anyone think of any I missed?
