Unanswered Questions

Not as many as you'd think:

Spinoff?

Hurley: "You know, you were a real good number two."
Ben: "You were a great number one."

Does anyone else think this was intended to leave room for a spinoff? Suddenly, I want to know what happened when Hurley and Ben ruled the island. They could have ruled for thousands of years.. who knows? .. wishful thinking?

Series Finale Recap.. initial thoughts

Sarah and I met a couple of friends at a local movie theater to watch the finale on the big screen.. It was a full house, the news was there.. it was a night to remember.

My initial thoughts on the end are that... it was perfect! It's exactly what I was hoping for from this episode. It turns out they were dead the whole time.. all of their struggles to get off the island.. perhaps even MIB's struggle to get off the island, were futile attempts to return to their lives.. or to the previous "level" of life. All they had to do the whole time was "let go...." What ever happened, happened.. there IS no changing it... The very end with jack closing his eye was absolutely perfect. His opening eye and closing eye acting like bookends to the entire series. Just brilliant.

Alright, I've had a few beers tonight and I need to sleep on this, so I'll reserve my more in depth analysis for tomorrow or later in the week.

Episode Recap - "What They Died For"

It's JACK!! Or is it? Why do I feel like there's still a curveball coming? Maybe MIB will kill Jack and someone will have to take his place? Maybe Jacob is just testing Jack to see if he's really candidate material? Or... Maybe Jack really is the replacement. In a way it makes sense since it's such a predictable choice and Jacob is supposed to represent faith and order...

What I was genuinely surprised about though, was that Ben showed his true colors.. He is as conniving and murderous as ever... anyway, I'm at work and cant' spend a lot of time writing this, but here's the official recap:

On the island: Locke's group:
- Locke finds Ben with Widmore and Zoe at the barracks
- Kills Zoe
- Threatens to kill Widmore's daughter, Penny, if Widmore doesn't tell him everything
- Learns from Widmore why Desmond is important
- Ben kills Widmore to prevent him from telling Locke everything
- Locke discovers that Desmond isn't dead and is missing from the well
- Reveals that he is going to destroy the island

On the island: Jack's group:
- Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley look for the well where Desmond is kept
- Jacob meets them and tells them everything about the island
- Jacob brought them all there so one of them could take his place
- Jacob chose them because they were alone, flawed and needed the island as much as it needed them
- One of them has to protect the light at the center of the island from ever going out
- Jacob doesn't want to chose one of them; he gives them the choice
- Jack says he'll do it
- Jacob performs the ceremony with Jack, and Jack becomes the protector of the island

Flash sideways:
- Ben sees Desmond at the school again and tries to stop him
- Desmond explains he's trying not to hurt Locke but to help him "let go"
- Desmond beats Ben, and Ben sees flashes of something but doesn't understand it
- Locke hears Ben's story and is moved by it
- Desmond turns himself in to the police; Sawyer puts him in a holding cage with Sayid and Kate
- Locke goes to the hospital and talks to Jack and says maybe what happened to him is happening for a reason; maybe Jack is supposed to fix him
- Ben is driven home by Alex and her mother, Danielle Rousseau
- Ben has dinner with Alex and Danielle, and there's a sweet, romantic spark between Ben and Danielle
- As Desmond, Kate and Sayid are being transported to county lockup, Ana Lucia lets them go
- Hurley drives up and takes Sayid with him; Desmond tells Kate they are going to a concert

The Well and the Lighthouse

I'm sure this is just coincidence, but the song "The Well and the Lighthouse" by Arcade Fire could have been written specifically for LOST... Here are the lyrics:

I am serving time
All for a crime I did commit
You want the truth?
You know I'd do it all again
Left for dead, heaven is only in my head

In my head, in my head
In my head, in my head

I heard a voice
Calling from down inside the well
"See that silver shine?"
She said to come claim what was mine
So down I fell, down into the water black
My prison cell, only the moon was shining back

Shining back, shining back
Shining back, shining back

If I seem lost
Well, I weighed the cost
And chose my crime
Now it's mine, all mine!

I heard the voice
Calling from just outside the well
She said
"You fool, now that you know your end is near
You always fall for what you desire or what you fear"

What you fear, what you fear
What you fear, what you fear

Resurrected, living in a lighthouse
If you leave them ships are going wreck

Resurrected, living in a lighthouse
The lions and the lambs ain't sleeping yet

Resurrected, living in a lighthouse
Can you see the funny side?
The ships are going wreck

Resurrected, living in a lighthouse
The lions and the lambs ain't sleeping yet

The lions and the lambs ain't sleeping yet
The lions and the lambs ain't sleeping yet

Episode Recap – "Across the Sea"

After talking with some of my coworkers this morning, it seems this episode has people divided. Some loved it.. some thought it was a distraction from the real story. I thought it was one of the most important episodes yet because it went a long way in explaining the "mythology" behind the series. It helped us get closer to answering the question, "What IS the island?" We know the origin of the wheel. And of course, we now know the identities of the skeletons dubbed Adam and Eve.

Here's probably the most important scene from the episode:
Mother explains she is taking them to someplace that only she can show them. The Boy in Black asks if she knew about the men, and Mother says yes. She didn't tell the boys because the men are dangerous and she didn't want to frighten them. Jacob asks what makes the men dangerous, and Mother says the same thing that makes all men dangerous. They come, they fight, they destroy, they corrupt. And it always ends the same. The Boy in Black picks up on something and asks where they "come" from. Mother quickly says another part of the island. And she warns the boys to never go looking for them because the men will hurt them. Jacob asks why, and Mother says because they're people and that's what people do. The Boy in Black says they're people, so does that mean they can hurt each other? Mother stops, and we can see the pain in her face. She gently pulls their blindfolds off and says no, she's made it so they can never hurt each other.

The boys look past her and see something amazing. They ask what this place is, and Mother says it's the reason they're here. They are standing at a pristine part of the island, a stream shrouded in darkness from the trees surrounding it. The stream flows into a small opening underground and cascades over a waterfall into a crevice. And from inside the crevice rises a pure white light. The light creates a sense that something exceptional and special lies beneath the waterfall deep in the earth.

Mother holds the boys back from stepping into the water. Jacob seems a little confused, maybe even scared, but his brother is fascinated. Almost hypnotized. He asks what's down there, and Mother tells him, with quiet reverence, light. The warmest, brightest light they have ever seen or felt. And they must make sure no one ever finds it. The Boy in Black says it's beautiful, and Mother says yes, it is. That's why they want it. A little bit of the light is in every man, and they always want more. Jacob is afraid and asks if the men can take it. Mother says no, but they will try. And if they try, they could put it out. If the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere. So Mother has protected this place but she can't protect it forever. The Boy in Black asks then who will, and Mother says it will have to be one of them.

Do we all agree that the light represents life, or the source of life? If so, why did MIB turn into the black smoke when he went into the light?

Here's the official recap from ABC:
  • Claudia washes up on the island, shipwrecked and very pregnant
  • Mother helps her give birth to twin boys
  • Mother kills Claudia and raises the boys as her own
  • Mother tells Jacob and the Boy in Black the island is the only place in the world
  • A 13-year-old Boy in Black finds a senet game and teaches a 13-year-old Jacob how to play it
  • Hunting boar, Jacob and his brother discover other people living on the island
  • Claudia appears to the Boy in Black and tells him she is his mother and the other people on the island are his people who shipwrecked there
  • The Boy in Black leaves to go live with his people and find a way off the island
  • 30 years later, Jacob discovers the Man in Black and his people are digging wells trying to find a way to leave
  • Mother knocks the Man in Black unconscious and kills all the people in his village
  • Mother performs a ceremony and Jacob becomes the protector of the island
  • The Man in Black regains consciousness, sees what Mother did, and kills her
  • Jacob throws the Man in Black into the heart of the island and creates the smoke monster
  • Jacob leaves the bodies of his mother and his brother in the caves

Negative Capability

Damon Lindelof just posted a link to a wikipedia article about the concept of "Negative Capability." The article is here.

Here it is in a nutshell:
"Negative capability is a theory of the poet John Keats describing the capacity for accepting uncertainty and the unresolved."

A very special Mother's Day edition.

I called my mother today to wish her a happy Mother's Day and inevitably, the conversation steered toward the last episode of Lost. We came to the conclusion that Sayid did indeed die at the beginning of the season. Ever since he was "resurrected" hes been Jacob. This theory has been in the back of both of our heads for awhile, but this episode helped to confirm it.

Let me explain.. Dead jacob told Hurley to bring dying Sayid to the temple where they can help him. When Sayid was put in the water, the water was "dirty" we're thinking that the "dirt" was Jacob.. in the same way that Locke can become smoke. We know that Locke doesn't get along with water from this latest episode.. maybe Jacob "rules" the water.. which is why an island is the perfect place to contain him.

I believe that when Dogen tested Sayid by shocking him, he knew that Jacob was in Sayid's body.. but found that Sayid was not a suitable candidate (because of his sins). Which is why he asked Jack to kill him.

Now, Sayid has blown himself up.. and "Jacob" is again in the water. So someone is going to drown again and Jacob will take his or her body.. or maybe he'll take Sun's or Jin's?

Episode Recap - "The Candidate"

What a great episode! Though, I did think some of the scenes were more '24' than LOST (Jack's line, "There is no Sayid" for instance). Do you really think this is the end of Sayid? They never explained what really happened to him in the temple. Maybe him picking up the bomb and blowing himself up qualifies for the "candidates can't kill themselves" rule?

It's so interesting how the Losties are all gradually finding each other in the Flash Sideways. I'm curious to see how that story line will end.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Sun and Jin, but man... What can I say? Jin, giving up his life for just a few more moments with his true love. One of the most tragic scenes of the series.. any series for that matter.

Here's the recap from ABC's website.

On Hydra island: Locke's group

  •
Locke takes Jack to Hydra island to rescue his friends, who have been captured by Widmore and locked in the polar bear cages
  •
Jack doesn't trust Locke, but Locke says he could've killed Jack and his friends at any time and hasn't; in fact, Locke saved Jack's life
  •
Jack agrees to help
  •
The smoke monster attacks Widmore's team and kills most of them
  •
Jack unlocks the cages and lets out Sawyer, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Jin, Claire and Lapidus
  •
Sayid tells them Locke is waiting for them at the plane
  •
Locke tells them the plane has been rigged with explosives and shows them a brick of C-4 he found inside; they decide to take Widmore's sub
  •
Sawyer tells Jack to make sure Locke doesn't get on the sub with them
  •
Sawyer, Jin, Hurley and Lapidus take over the sub
  •
Jack punches Locke and pushes him into the water
  •
Kate and Claire are getting in when Widmore's men try to stop them
  •
Kate is shot in the shoulder
  •
Jack and Sayid get Kate inside while Claire provides cover fire
  •
Sawyer closes the hatch and orders them to leave
  •
Claire is upset that they're leaving without her, but Locke tells her she doesn't want to be on that sub
  •
Jack can't find a first aid kit for Kate, and in his pack finds the C-4 inside rigged to a timer and ready to blow
  •
Jack tells them nothing will happen
  •
Sawyer doesn't trust Jack and pulls out two wires to stop it
  •
The timer speeds up; Sawyer realizes he armed it to explode
  •
Sayid tells them about Desmond in the well and then runs away as the C-4 detonates
  •
Jack finds two small oxygen tanks; Hurley takes Kate out with one and Jack takes Sawyer out with the other
  •
Sun is trapped underneath a cabinet and Jin stays with her; they die together holding each other's hands
  •
Kate and Hurley, Jack and Sawyer make it back to the main island

Flash sideways:
  •
Locke wakes up from surgery, and Jack tells him everything went well
  •
Jack saw Locke's original spinal injury and says Locke is a candidate for a new procedure that could allow him to walk again
  •
Locke doesn't want the surgery; Jack asks why, but Locke won't tell him
  •
Jack discovers that Anthony Cooper was in the original accident with Locke
  •
Jack tracks down Anthony Cooper at a nursing home and discovers he's paralyzed from the neck down
  •
Claire visits Jack at the hospital and asks about a music box their father left her; Jack doesn't know what it means
  •
Jack invites Claire to stay at his place because she's family
  •
Locke tells Jack about the accident: he was in a plane crash
  •
Locke had his pilot's license a week and begged his father to be his first passenger; the plane crashed and it was Locke's fault; and a man he loves more than anything will never walk or talk again
  •
Jack tells Locke he can punish himself all he wants but what happened, happened; Locke needs to let it go

Episode Recap - "Everybody Loves Hugo"

I knew Elana was going to bite it the way she was playing with that Dynamite... DUMBASS! Now we pretty much know this is hell, or purgatory, or the "first" part of the afterlife.. Since Hurley asked Michael, "Are you one of the guys that... can't move on?" and Michael responded, "Yes.. because of what I did.."

I think the well symbolizes the search for truth, or morality. Lock explains that the well is very old and very deep. The places where the wells were dug used to make people's compasses go crazy so they dug the wells to find out why. Throwing Desmond, the one person who is exposing the truth to everyone, down the well seems like a very symbolic act. I can't wrap my head around what it symbolizes yet, though.

What's done is done, What happens, happens...

After rewatching the episode, "The Package" I noticed something. There are two lines that are very similar... When Locke is talking to Claire about Kate and how he needs her, he says that once she's on the plane, "What happens, happens." Implying that her fate is out his hands once they're off the island... Then later, when "glasses lady" is talking to Whitmore about how they captured Jin by accident, he says, "What's done, is done." Meaning, there's nothing he can do about it now..

Last season, there was an episode titled, "What happened, happened." Here's the official recap of that episode.

Is this a hint? What does it mean?

Episode Recap - "The Package"

What a coincidence! that was my nickname in swim class....

The single most important part of this episode for me was when Sun got shot in the stomach and she told Jin that she was preggers.. Earlier this season, Claire was going into labor when Ethan gave her the choice to have the baby now, or later with the help of drugs.. I believe there is a connection here. Both Claire and Sun were pregnant while on the island.. What the connection is? I have no idea.

Who's "The Package?" What was up with Sayid and Desmond's encounter with eachother? Was Desmond drunk? or drugged? Is Widmore good? They really need to answer these questions and stop with the BS!

Episode Recap - "Ab Aeterno"

The episode title "Ab Aeterno" is Latin for "From the beginning of time."

Man.. what an episode. It's been awhile since we've had a great one like this. The episode starts with Ilana telling everyone about when Jacob visited her in the hospital. He tells her to listen to Ricardus because he'll know what to do. Richard then reveals that he has NO idea what to do.. in fact, he's ready to kill himself, or betray Jacob. It's at this point that Richard tells us something that we've been waiting for..
"You're dead. We're all dead. Every single one of us. And this... all of this? It's not what you think it is. We're not on an island. We never were. We're in hell."
My first thought was, "Did he just say what I think he said? How sure is he? Are the writers playing with us again?" But given the amount of time we have left in the series, there's a good chance that this was a huge reveal. This could be a big part of the puzzle.

At this point, they flashback to Richard riding a horse in the 1860's. He's in the Canary islands and his wife is deathly ill. He ends up killing a doctor to get some life saving medicine for her... but it's too late. She dies before he can reach her.

Interestingly, Richard is given a similar choice later in the episode and tries to kill Jacob whom he thinks is el diablo. He thinks that if he does this, he'll be reunited with his wife.. he made the SAME decision. All you losties know that this is a repeating pattern in the series. People are given a chance to redeem themselves and sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I, for one, found it interesting that when Richard DIDN'T redeem himself, he was given the gift of eternal life by Jacob.. Other's who did redeem themselves, notibly Mr Echo, Boon, Locke, all died. So maybe this IS hell and Jacob IS the devil?

After Jacob subdues Richard and virtually "baptizes" him in the ocean water, we are treated to this bit of dialog, which I shall deem, "The Golden Minute" of the series thus far:

At a fire, Alpert sits wrapped in a blanket, warming himself. Jacob comes out of the statue with a bottle of wine. Alpert asks what's inside the statue, and Jacob says no one goes in unless he invites them. Alpert asks if Jacob is the devil, and Jacob says no. He explains who he is and that he brought Alpert's ship to the island. Jacob says to think of the wine as what he would call "hell." There are other words for it, too. Malevolence. Evil. Darkness. And it's there swirling around in the bottle unable to get out. Because if it did, it would spread. Now think of the cork as the island, and it's the only thing keeping hell where it belongs. The Man who sent Alpert to kill Jacob believes any person can be corrupted because it's their nature to sin. So Jacob brings people to the island to prove him wrong. When they get here, their past doesn't matter. The island washes away their sins, and they get a second chance. But the Man has killed everyone that's come. Alpert asks if Jacob brought them there, then why didn't he help them? Jacob says because he wants them to help themselves, to know the differences between right and wrong without him telling them. Alpert says if he doesn't step in, then the Man in Black will. Jacob nods, and then gets an idea. He looks at Alpert and asks if he wants a job. If Jacob doesn't want to step in, maybe Alpert can do it for him. He can be Jacob's representative, an intermediary between Jacob and the people he brings to the island. Alpert asks what he'll get in return -- he wants his wife back. Jacob says he can't do that. Alpert asks if he can absolve him of his sins so he doesn't go to hell, but Jacob can't do that either. Then Alpert says he never wants to die. He wants to live forever. Jacob reaches out and touches Alpert and says that he can do.
Later, with Hurley's help, Richard is finally reunited with his wife, after 150 years. She tells him to stop the Man in Black, or "We all go to Hell." Which is in line with what Jacob told him. Suddenly, Richard is the new hero of the series... I'm glad for it. He's struggled for over a century to serve Jacob. After having so many doubts about this long life of service, it would be great to see it all be worthwhile in the end.

So there you have it.. Thoughts??

DAMN IT HARRIS!!!

This is the last season of LOST. For years you have spoiled us with fantastic synposisssssess and theories and now that we have almost reached the top of the mountain and you are going to pull the rug out from beneath us??? This is an outrage! We have 8 hours left. Finish what you started Harris. You are a leader, you are our John Locke. Lead and we will follow.

"The Lighthouse" as seen by someone who's never watched LOST

Got this gem from a coworker.. too funny.

Episode Recap - "The Lighthouse"

Sorry it took so long to post this.. I'm as confused as ever. By now, we know that the Flash Sideways's are filled with subtle differences from the original timeline. The question I have is, Is it because of the nuke? Was it some kind of "buttefly effect" thing that threw off the course of history? or Are they in some kind of parallel universe? Following that logic, was all of the time travel from last season, really "parallel universe travel?

Here's the official recap from ABC:

On the island: Hurley and Jack:

  • Jacob appears to Hurley and tells him he has to take Jack and go somewhere. Someone's coming to the island, and they need to help them find it.
  • To get him to go, Hurley tells Jack "he has what it takes."
  • Hurley and Jack trek through the jungle to an ancient lighthouse.
  • Jack discovers his name next to the number 23 on the wheel that turns the lighthouse mirror. When he turns the mirror to that number, an image of his childhood home appears in the mirror.
  • Jack becomes angry, smashing the mirror. He wants to know why Jacob was watching him.
  • Jacob tells Hurley the people will find the island another way. Jack and Hurley just needed to get as far away from the Temple as possible because someone bad is going there.

On the island: Jin and Claire:

  • Claire gets Jin out of the bear trap, takes him to her hovel and cleans out his wound.
  • She also brings back Justin, the Other she shot, and demands to know where they are keeping her son or she'll kill him.
  • Jin tells Claire that Kate took Aaron and has raised him for the past three years.
  • Claire kills Justin anyway -- she slams an ax into his chest.
  • Scared, Jin says he was lying. Claire's relieved because if Kate did take Aaron, she'd have to kill her.
  • Locke visits Claire, and she tells Jin this is her friend.

Flash sideways:

  • Jack has a son named David and is late picking him up from school.
  • Oceanic still has not found the coffin. Jack helps his mother find Christian's will.
  • David disappears, and Jack tracks him down to a music conservatory audition.
  • Jack asks why David didn't tell him about the audition, and David says he didn't want Jack to see him fail.
  • Jack confesses that his own father told him he didn't have what it takes, and Jack spent his whole life carrying that around. He doesn't want David to ever feel that way and tells him that loves him and in his eyes, he can never fail.

Episode Recap - "The Substitute"

After watching this episode, I'm not sure if we've come closer to understanding what the numbers mean, or if they've raised one more questions. The man in Black brought Sawyer to a cave. On the ceiling of the cave, Jacob had written a bunch of names with corresponding numbers. The names are "candidates" to take over for Jacob. The only ones not crossed out were as follows (via lostpedia):

  • 4 - Locke
  • 8 - Reyes
  • 15 - Ford
  • 16 - Jarrah
  • 23 - Shephard
  • 42 - Kwon

The Man in Black explains that each candidate has three choices:

1. Stay until you're 'crossed out'.
2. Take over and become the new 'Jacob'.
3. Leave.

As he explains this, he crosses out the name and number of Locke.

This raises some questions:
  • Locke is the first number and was also the first "leader" out of the group. Hurley (Reyes) is the new leader and the next number. Does that mean he's going to be "crossed out" next?
  • Which Kwon is number 42? The man in Black mentioned Sun and Jin, but he neglected to mention that they also have a child which would share that last name.
  • What about the people who are still in the mix but not written on the ceiling? Claire and Aaron? Kate?
Did you guys notice the scale with the black and white stones in perfect balance? That somewhat confirms our theory of the island representing the Man in Black and Jacob living in perfect balance.. the question is, what do they represent? I'm sticking with life and death.

It's interesting to see the "Flash Sideways." and how people's lives were changed as a result of the bomb.. some things are the same, some things are slightly different, and some things are wayy different.

Episode Recap – "What Kate Does"

Sorry guys. Its been a really busy week for me. Here's the official recap from ABC... I can't believe they actually named the guy "Lennon." There's so much to talk about but I wont be able to comment til this weekend. But lets keep talking! I have a theory on how the series will end. I'll share it this weekend.

Here is your brief recap of "What Kate Does." For the more detailed recap of this episode, click the link at the bottom!

On the island: at the Temple:

  • Dogen and Lennon "test" Sayid and realize he's infected.
  • They give Jack a pill to give Sayid. Jack refuses to give it to him and takes it himself.
  • Dogen forces Jack to spit the pill out and admits it's poison.
  • Dogen is sure Sayid has been claimed by darkness because it also happened to Jack's sister.

On the island: tracking Sawyer:

  • Sawyer leaves the Temple and tells Kate not to come after him.
  • Kate goes after him anyway. Jin goes with her, along with two Others: Aldo and Justin.
  • Kate finds Sawyer at his old house in the barracks. He blames himself for Juliet staying. She was going to leave the island, but he asked her to stay because he didn't want to be alone. He was going to propose to her.
  • On his way back to the Temple, Jin steps into a bear trap while fleeing from Aldo and Justin, who are then shot. The person shooting at them is none other than Claire.

Flash sideways:

  • Kate takes off in the cab and abandons Claire on a city street.
  • She gets the handcuffs cut off and discovers baby items in Claire's suitcase.
  • Feeling guilty, she goes back, picks up Claire and drives her to the adoptive couple's house.
  • The couple can't adopt the baby, and Claire goes into contractions. Kate rushes her to the hospital.
  • Dr. Ethan Goodspeed tends to Claire and gives her a shot to stop the contractions.
  • Claire lies to the police about Kate, giving her a chance to get away.

Episode Recap - LA X

Okay. I'll admit it. At the very beginning of the episode, when the nuke went off and the white of the explosion gave way to the white of the clouds. I got so excited that I peed a little. Right in my pants. Not enough that anyone would notice.. but just enough to let me know that I was not in control anymore... It could have been the excitement, or, maybe it was the Dharma beer I was drinking. Only Jacob knows.

Now, about the episode. Last season, our brains were bending with all of the time travel... was this 1977? was this 2004? 2009? It was challenging to say the least. Now they've introduced an entirely different timeline. The Lost people are calling it a "flash-sideways" (get it?). Similar to a flash-back or flash-forward, except it's happening at roughly the same time as the main timeline that we've been watching since the beginning of the series.. except in some parallel universe... MIND = BLOWN.

How this alternative universe plays out will be interesting. It seems as though there are a few parallels to the normal timeline.. Charlie dies, Rose and Bernard are separated but then reunited..etc... but most interesting for me was who was noticeably missing from the flight. Where was Claire? Eko? Shannon? What was Desmond doing there? WHY DID THEY USE CRAPPY CGI FOR THAT POINTLESS SWEEP-IN ON THE UNDERWATER ISLAND??

Back to the "normal" timeline: We're introduced to a whole new group of others. Led by a Japanese guy who doesn't like the taste of English(?) and his translator, John Lennon. To make a long story short.. They are convinced by a letter from Jacob to help save Sayid. They put him in a dirty jacuzzi and say he can't be saved.. but somehow, he is saved. Jacob however, is dead. But still alive in a way. The episode ends with the new group of others bolstering their defenses by spreading ash around the temple to keep out the smoke monster. And a dead Juliet telling Sawyer that "it worked."

I was expecting this episode to answer more questions than it asked.. It didn't. So it will be interesting to see how they plan to wrap all this up.

One thing I was right about was that the "new" Locke is a manifestation of the Smoke Monster. One of my favorite lines from this episode was when Locke said to Ben, "Sorry you had to see me like that." Brilliant.

Just to be clear. I was joking about peeing my pants... Or was I?

The struggle between life and death

Just got done watching the final episode of last season again and I wanted to share an observation I had. In the beginning of the episode ("The Incident"), Jacob and the "Man in Black" are seen on a beach looking at a large sailing ship (the Black Rock) in the distance when we hear the following exchange:

JACOB: I take it you're here because of the ship.
Man in Black: I am. How did they find the Island?
JACOB: You'll have to ask them when they get here.
Man in Black: I don't have to ask. You brought them here. Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
JACOB: You are wrong.
Man in Black: Am I? They come. They fight. They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same.
JACOB: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.
Man in Black: Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?
JACOB: Yes.
Man in Black: One of these days, sooner or later... I'm going to find a loophole, my friend.
JACOB: Well, when you do, I'll be right here.

During the course of the episode, we are shown a series of flashbacks where Jacob encounters each of the Flight 815 survivors. During these flashbacks, Jacob touches each survivor. According to the commentary at the bottom, the touch is very important. Everyone he touches survives the crash.

The man in black on the other hand always assumes the body of a dead man. First he was Christian Shepard (At least that's my theory). Then he was Locke.

This made me think back to different events during the series. Ben's life was saved by "the island" as a child. Locke was healed twice by "the island." Many people have been saved by the island and many have been killed by it (Ecko, Boone, Claire?). Some people (Richard) have been granted eternal life.

The island represents a perfect balance between life and death. Jacob representing life, and the man in black representing death. This is why there had to be a loophole to kill Jacob.. because you cant kill something that represents eternal life. Why Ben is that loophole remains a mystery..

The message of the series is that people can't accept the perfect balance that the island offers. They always end up using the island's unique powers to their own ends.. But in the exchange above, Jacob expresses his faith in people's power to overcome their desire for power and to live in complete balance,... like Rose and Bernard.
