Okay. I'll admit it. At the very beginning of the episode, when the nuke went off and the white of the explosion gave way to the white of the clouds. I got so excited that I peed a little. Right in my pants. Not enough that anyone would notice.. but just enough to let me know that I was not in control anymore... It could have been the excitement, or, maybe it was the Dharma beer I was drinking. Only Jacob knows.
Now, about the episode. Last season, our brains were bending with all of the time travel... was this 1977? was this 2004? 2009? It was challenging to say the least. Now they've introduced an entirely different timeline. The Lost people are calling it a "flash-sideways" (get it?). Similar to a flash-back or flash-forward, except it's happening at roughly the same time as the main timeline that we've been watching since the beginning of the series.. except in some parallel universe... MIND = BLOWN.
How this alternative universe plays out will be interesting. It seems as though there are a few parallels to the normal timeline.. Charlie dies, Rose and Bernard are separated but then reunited..etc... but most interesting for me was who was noticeably missing from the flight. Where was Claire? Eko? Shannon? What was Desmond doing there? WHY DID THEY USE CRAPPY CGI FOR THAT POINTLESS SWEEP-IN ON THE UNDERWATER ISLAND??
Back to the "normal" timeline: We're introduced to a whole new group of others. Led by a Japanese guy who doesn't like the taste of English(?) and his translator, John Lennon. To make a long story short.. They are convinced by a letter from Jacob to help save Sayid. They put him in a dirty jacuzzi and say he can't be saved.. but somehow, he is saved. Jacob however, is dead. But still alive in a way. The episode ends with the new group of others bolstering their defenses by spreading ash around the temple to keep out the smoke monster. And a dead Juliet telling Sawyer that "it worked."
I was expecting this episode to answer more questions than it asked.. It didn't. So it will be interesting to see how they plan to wrap all this up.
One thing I was right about was that the "new" Locke is a manifestation of the Smoke Monster. One of my favorite lines from this episode was when Locke said to Ben, "Sorry you had to see me like that." Brilliant.
Just to be clear. I was joking about peeing my pants... Or was I?

I was NOT disappointed! It was a very exciting episode, but I was suprised to see them introducing MORE people, when I expected them to begin wrapping things up...
Michael & Walt were also among the missing on the plane.
When I saw the underwater Island, I automatically thought ATLANTIS! but, that's all I thought.
Looking forward to next week, I'm inspired to make some LOST snacks of my own...
Oh! almost forgot! The flight attendant was among the new "others." What's up with that?? Sarah thinks the children with the others are the children that were kidnapped from the camp in season 1.
I was part of the disappointed party. Michael and Walt definitely were missing from the plane although it would have been interesting to see Walt (back on the plane in 2004) now that he has grown up and gone through puberty.
As far as the time travel I don't think ANY time has been past 2007. I believe that is the show's "present time". It started in 2004, they were on the island for 40 days (even though that was like 2 or 3 seasons of our time) then they left the island for 3 years which brings us to "now" (2007).
There seems to be a Final Destination/Your destiny is inevitable feel to it. So far a lot of things that have happened on the island are happening in the LAX/Real World.
1. When the plane crashed the US Marshall (holding Kate) get hit in the head and bleeds. When Kate came out of the bathroom and hit him, the Marshall got hit and bled from the exact same spot.
2. Locke plays the father figure/advisor role to Boone
3. Charlie dies on the island / Charlie almost died on the plane. Was that it or will he actually OD on heroin and die in real life?
4.Claire leaves Aaron and Kate becomes his mother on the island. Coincidentally, gun wielding Kate is now in a cab with Claire. There lives are now intertwining. Will Claire leave Aaron at some point to which Kate will assume responsibility?
Juliet seems to be the only one to know the hydrogen bomb worked and there is this “other universe”.
I think in the end everyone will have a choice for their universe. Someone will choose the life of no plane crash (Boone, he died on the island) Kate will choose the crash (she is a felon off of the island).
As far as Sayid's angle. Right before Sayid died he was talking about wanting to get redemption for all the pain that he’s caused and that he’s killed more people than he can remember. Jacob tells Hurley they he must take Sayid to this temple. They basically baptise him like Jesus and he died (and then comes back). Did Jacob take over Sayid's body in the way the Man in Black took over Locke's? If Jacob takes over his body and “saves” does this symbolize as some form of redemption for Sayid?
Great point about Sayid. When they were pulling him out of the water, he even looked like a crucifix. My thought is that either Sayid is Jacob, like you say.. or Aaron is Jacob.
I think we can safely assume that Jacob gets reincarnated because way back in season 3, Richard was scouring the world looking for a child who was a reincarnation of someone.. and its becoming clear that its Jacob... I'll bet they revisit that this season.
Charlie didnt almost die. He was totally dead. Jack revived him. It was interesting that Charlie said, "I was supposed to die." We know that he's right.
Hey guys,
Last nights episode only deepened my addition to this damn show, what ever will I do when it ends? "Hoping for a spin off ala Charles in Charge"
Anyway, I felt like we got alot of answes last night, though in typical LOST fashion we were forced to "read between the lines"
I'll start with the one most evident to me. Hurley's ability to see dead people. It's been mentioned by previous ghost images that he wasn't crazy, and he couldn't see dead people which seems to contradict itself but after last nights "Flash Sideways" I am now thinking that Hurley's ability is that he can see and communicate with people in different timelines, or that he really is talking to people that are in purgatory.
Second they are finally exploring my favorite story-line, the backgammon story-line. You remember the first episode where Locke tells Walt there are always two sides, "One light, and one Dark". This was the screaming at me during the whole episode last night, Jacob and Smokey, Jack and Sawyer. Which leads to an idea my wife mentioned. Jack and Sawyer seemed to be taking over the roles of Jacob and Smokey in a way, it will be interesting if they get pass the torch.
Did anyone else wonder why if the bomb went off, how was it Juliet was still breathing and not some black mark on the wall?? Guessing what we're seeing isn't the same timeline that we saw last season.
I didn't catch the "Final Destination" reference until you mentioned it, though the theory sounds plausible.
I enjoyed the hell out of last nights show, I just wonder how many timeline's we were actually watching?? I actually felt like it was much more then two, but at the same time I think I'm wrong so basically I'm...... well... Lost.
I really enjoyed this episode. I have to log onto this blog because you guys see so much more than I do. How in the world do you catch al those little things? I agree that Sayid is a reincarnated Jacob. I thought of hat right away.
That last comment was from me, not Joe. He must have logged into his google account when he was here and never logged out.
I was gonna say.. that doesn't sound like Joe.
i think that the paper pulled out of the guitar case was a list of names that jacob wrote saying that jack and all them had been chosen. if you remember it the very first season that some of the suvivors were taken away by the others including the stewardess and the two kids that she was taking care of. then if i remember correctly ben said that jacob wrote a list that said they were worthy.
also i think this is taking a donnie darko turn. where in the alternate reality of the plane not crashing at first it will be all happy and good but then slowly start to go bad until i don't know what.
I totally forgot about them kidnapping those kids til you guys reminded me. I agree about the Donnie Darko thing.. Theres some tangent universe weirdness going on here. btw.. Do I know you Jonathan? Or did you just stumble onto the blog? Identify yourself I say!
Sorry. Yeah I guess we haven't met. I'm trisha's boyfriend.
Nice to "meet" you Jonathan. Welcome to the blog!
