I picked up on this when I first watched "The Constant" but it only became clear how significant it was when I watched it for a second time...
Penny's father won an auction for a journal that was from the ship "Black Rock." The same Black Rock that is on the island. This journal is the only remaining piece of the ship that is known to the outside world. The rest of the ship was "lost at sea" sometime in the mid 1800's. It's contents have only been seen by the "Hanso" family... sound familiar? They are likely the founders of the Hanso Foundation.. who are responsible for the Dharma initiative.
What is the significance of Penny's father winning the auction? Does the journal have some information about how to get to the island? Does Desmond read it at some point between 1996 and 2004 and as a result, go on a journey to the island? Was the "round the world race" just a pretense for his trip to the island? Does Desmond's suspicious line to Jack from Season two "See ya in another life brother" have more significance now? Is there something that we don't know about Desmond? Does Penny's father have a bigger role to play?

Desmond has lived many lives it seems. He was a Monk and lived in a monastery for however many years. He went to college and had to drop out because something happened in his family.He was also in the army; Sailed around the world and don't forget that he has lived on the island for a few years it seems. Was he in jail too?...He's done a LOT that we know of and I'm sure even more that we don't know of.
Remember Libby? She was the one who gave Desmond (a stranger) her late husband's boat to sail around the world. Did they ever say who her husband was?
She was also in Hurleys flashback, she was in the mental hospital.
Leah, I forgot about Libby giving Desmond the boat. Was that Hurley's girlfriend Libby? The one that died on the Island? Great point about Desmond telling Jack "see you in another life brother" Was he going back and forth for a while, did he really mean it when he said that? If Penny and Desmond were broken up and she did not want to see him anymore, why was she trying to find him for 3 years? Were they together when he went on his trip around the world because remember he told her in this episode that he would not call her for 8 yrs. As usual- very confused- but lovin it!
