I don't think we're in Kansas anymore...

Anyone else noticing how a lot of the episode titles have references to the Wizard of Oz? Also.. a lot of the characters fit the pattern of that story. Remember Henry Gale? The Balloon? Julliette always wanting to go home? Well I found a great article about it on Lostpedia. Check it out.

Episode Recap - "There's No Place Like Home" - Part 1

An airplane flies through blue skies. The co-pilot brings out his lucky rabbit's foot, and the pilot chastises him for freaking him out. The co-pilot says with the cargo they're carrying, it's bad mojo. The pilot turns to Karen Decker, Oceanic rep, and tells her they're ready to land. Karen walks back to the cargo hold to the Oceanic 6. Karen explains that their families are waiting for them at the airport, along with the press. Jack speaks for the group, says they'll talk to the press. Karen leaves, and Jack reminds the group they all know the story. If there's a question they can't answer, don't say anything. Everyone will think they're in shock. Sun tells him they are in shock.

The plane lands, and they step off to a cheering crowd of Oceanic officials, Coast Guard luminaries, the press, and their families. It's emotional as the survivors reunite with their families. Jack is enveloped into the arms of his mother. Sun hugs her parents, as does Hurley and his parents. There is no one there for Sayid, but Hurley grabs him into his family hug. Kate stands alone holding Aaron.

WHOOSH to the beach as the survivors look at the sat-phone Lapidus dropped out of the helicopter on his fly-by. Sun suggests they use it to call them, and Jack warns Faraday not to do anything stupid. Faraday hits some buttons, and suddenly they can hear the conversation from inside the helicopter. They overhear Keamy tell his team that they are moving out to the Orchid. Jack asks Juliet about it, but she doesn't know what it is. Jack turns to Kate and asks her to go with him out to the chopper. Kate nods yes. Off to the side, Faraday tells Charlotte because Keamy's team is going to the Orchid, that means they're using the secondary protocol. He tells Charlotte they have to get off the island right now.

Jack and Kate follow the signal on the sat-phone through the jungle when they hear someone coming. Out of the brush marches Sawyer with Aaron and Miles. Kate asks where Claire is, and Sawyer explains she walked off alone into the jungle and is gone. Jack explains that they were following the helicopter's signal, and Sawyer tells them Keamy's wet team attacked them just like Locke said they would. Jack and Sawyer start to argue until Kate yells at them to stop. Jack tells them it's his call since he put Sayid and Desmond on the chopper. He wants them to return to the beach and takes off alone. Sawyer gives Aaron to Kate and follows, telling Jack he ain't dying alone. Kate, with Aaron, and Miles return to the beach.

WHOOSH back to the airport hanger for the Oceanic 6 press conference. Karen Decker reads a prepared statement to the gathered crowd. Based on the location of the crash in the Sunda Trench, the survivors were carried by ocean currents to an uninhabited island in the Lesser Sunda Islands called Membata. Ms. Austen's baby was born on Membata. On day 103, a typhoon washed up the remnants of a fishing boat which included basic supplies and a raft. On day 108, the six survivors used the raft to journey to the island of Sumba, where they came ashore near a village called Manukangga. Then they were flown to Honolulu.

The press begins to shout questions to them. Jack tells them the crash happened so fast. A group of them got out an emergency door before the plane went down, then they floated on cushions for over a day before the current brought them to Membata. Someone asks if Sun's husband made it off the plane. Sun pauses before answering and tells the press no, Jin never made it off the plane. Another reporter asks Kate about giving birth on the island, and Kate says scary. She tells them that Aaron is five weeks old. A reporter figures out that means she was six months pregnant when the Marshal arrested here, correct? Karen jumps up and says questions concerning Kate's legal situation are off limits. Afterwards, they go backstage looking exhausted and shocked. Jack tells Kate she did well. Karen comes in and tells Sayid that someone outside says she knows him but she's not on his list of family members. It's Nadia. Sayid rushes out, and there she is, waiting for him.

WHOOSH to Sayid on the raft floating up to the beach camp. Everyone asks about Desmond, and Sayid says he's waiting back on the freighter. Sayid tells them they have to leave immediately. The men in the helicopter are intent on killing them all. Juliet tells him that Jack and Kate just left to go to the helicopter.

Hurley, Ben and Locke continue their trek through the jungle. Ben tells them they are going to a greenhouse to move the island, just like Jacob told Locke to do. Hurley is doubtful. If it's so easy, why didn't Ben just move it before the psychos with the guns got there. Ben tells him it's dangerous and unpredictable. It's a measure of last resort. They reach a certain spot, and Ben uncovers an old wooden chest. Inside is an old tin of crackers, a pair of binoculars and a large, dirty mirror. Ben takes the mirror and positions himself in relation to the sun. He sends a signal, glinting the sun off it, to a nearby ridge. Miles away something glints back. Locke realizes that Ben just sent a coded message to the Others and that it was received. He asks Ben what the message was, and Ben tells him none of his business.

At the beach, chaos reigns. Sayid wants to catch up with Jack and Kate, but Faraday wants to start ferrying people off now. He says he can have most people off by the time they return. Sayid agrees, and Faraday organizes the first group. Juliet insists that since Sun is pregnant, she is part of the first group. Then Kate returns with Aaron and Miles. She explains what's going on, and Sayid offers to go back with her to find Jack and Sawyer. Kate hands Aaron to Sun and tells her to keep him safe.

WHOOSH to Sun, still pregnant, visiting her father in his office. Mr. Paik asks about the baby, but Sun tells him to stop pretending he's interested. They both know he hated Jin. Mr. Paik is shocked Sun is talking to him like that. Sun tells him Oceanic paid the survivors a very significant settlement, and that morning she used the money to purchase half of his company. He ruined Jin's life, and because of him, she and Jin were on that plane. So she holds her father and one other person responsible for Jin's death. After she has her baby, they are going to talk about the plans for the future of their company.

WHOOSH to Hurley driving up to his house and finding the front door is ajar. No one's home. Then he hears whispers. He approaches a set of doors, flings them open and surprise! His parents organized a birthday party for him. Hurley's dad takes him out to the garage for his present: it's the red Camaro all fixed up. His dad tells Hurley he worked on it as a memorial to him. Hurley is touched and climbs in. He looks down at the odometer and trip meter they're the numbers. 48151.6 and 234.2. Hurley freaks out, and his dad tries to tell him it's just a coincidence. Hurley says he doesn't want it and runs off.

WHOOSH to the raft as it approaches the freighter and unloads the first group. Michael comes out and announces the engine is fixed. He is obviously the last person Sun and Jin expected to see. Desmond learns that there is a RF interference with the fathometer and they won't be able to steer clear of the reefs. He searches the freighter and discovers a massive bomb with lots and lots of C-4 explosive hooked up to a complicated timing device and a radio receiver with a dormant red light and a glowing green light. He shows the others, and they immediately realize if the bomb goes off, the whole ship goes down.

WHOOSH to a church as Jack finally gives his father his long overdue memorial. As everyone leaves, a woman approaches Jack and tells him she thinks she is the reason his father came to Australia. Christian came to see his daughter. Her daughter. Jack says his father didn't have a daughter, but the woman tells him to check his dad's phone records. The strangest thing, though, is that their daughter was also on flight 815. Jack probably sat only a few rows from her, and he didn't even know she was his sister. Her name was Claire. Jack is shocked. She tells Kate her son is beautiful, and then she leaves.

WHOOSH to the island where Jack and Sawyer follow the signal through the jungle and reach the chopper. Lapidus is there handcuffed to it. He tells them Keamy's team went to the greenhouse to grab Ben, but once he's free, he can fly everyone out of there. Sawyer asks what will happen to the other people with Ben, and Lapidus says nothing good. Sawyer tells Jack that Hurley is with Ben.

Kate and Sayid run through the jungle following a trail, and Kate stops, confused. The tracks are different and doubling back behind them. Sayid pulls his gun, swings around and orders the person to show themselves now. Richard Alpert steps out of the jungle, as do many, many more Others. Kate and Sayid are surrounded. Alpert takes their guns, and Kate and Sayid are now captives of the Others.

WHOOSH to the jungle where Ben suddenly stops Hurley and Locke. They're at the Orchid station. Ben looks through the binoculars and points out that Keamy's wet team is already inside waiting for him. Ben thinks for a moment and decides to give himself up. He gives Locke instructions on how to get down to the Orchid station underneath the greenhouse and then leaves. One by one the wet team members come out from their positions. Keamy steps out in front, and Ben turns himself in. Without saying a word, Keamy smashes the butt of his gun into Ben's head, knocking him out. As Ben collapses BOOM. End of part one.

Episode Recap - "Cabin Fever"

A 16 year-old girl, Emily, gets ready for a date. However, her mother doesn't approve of the man, who is twice her age. They argue, and Emily runs out of the house into the street and is hit by a passing car! She is rushed to the hospital and tells a nurse she's pregnant. They rush her into a delivery, and her baby boy is born prematurely. Emily yells after them to name him John.

WHOOSH to John Locke carrying a torch through the jungle followed by Ben and Hurley. Hurley asks why they are looking for Jacob's cabin, and Locke tells him that Jacob will tell them how to stop the freighter people from coming and killing everyone on the island.

On the freighter, Sayid and Desmond see Keamy and his men return. The doctor works on their injured man. Keamy sees Captain Gault and jams his gun right under Gault's chin. He wants to know why Gault gave him up to Ben. Captain Gault says he's not the one who gave him up. Keamy asks who did. Gault leads him to Michael's room. Michael confesses he was the one to told Ben all of Keamy's information. Keamy tries to shoot Michael in the head, but the gun jams. Frustrated, Keamy savagely beats Michael.

THWACK! THWACK! THWACK! Locke is woken up by a sound in the jungle. He finds Horace Goodspeed chopping wood. Horace explains he was once a member of the Dharma Initiative but he's dead now, and Locke has to find him. Jacob has been waiting a long time. Locke suddenly wakes up and realizes it was a dream. However, he now knows where they need to go. Locke leads them to the mass grave where the dead Dharma Initiative members were buried after the Purge. Locke hops into the pit and begins looking through the corpses for Horace.

WHOOSH to the Emily's hospital room. A nurse explains that her baby is the youngest preemie to ever survive. Emily is overwhelmed, scared and starts to cry. She doesn't even want to hold her baby for the first time and runs out of the room. Emily's mom asks the nurse who she needs to talk to about adoption. Then she notices Richard Alpert standing in the hallway watching them.

Later, when John Locke is five years old, Alpert visits him in a foster home. His foster mother tells John to be on his best behavior. Alpert explains that he runs a school for kids who are extremely special, and they believe John might be one of them. Alpert notices a crayon drawing that's a swirling black cloud next to a screaming face. Alpert is amazed and asks John if he drew it. John nods. Alpert removes some items from his bag and places them in front of John. They are a worn baseball mitt, an old book, a glass vile filled with sand, a vintage comic book, an ancient looking compass and an old knife. He asks John what items already belong to him. Young John looks confused but concentrates on them. He reaches out and first selects the vile of sand. Then he selects the compass. He looks at the ancient book, but the knife catches his eyes and he picks it up.

Alpert is immediately disappointed and questions the choice of the knife. Is John sure it belongs to him? Young John nods yes. Alpert is disappointed. He puts the items back into his bag and stands to leave. John's foster mother returns, and Alpert tells her John isn't quite ready for their school.

WHOOSH to the mass grave where Ben explains to Hurley that it wasn't his decision to kill all the members of the Dharma Initiative. He wasn't the Others' leader at that time. Someone else was. Locke then finds Horace's corpse and searches through the jumpsuit's pockets. He finds a folded up blueprint for what would appear to be a cabin. Locke realizes he was building Jacob's cabin. Locke gives Hurley the option of leaving and returning to the beach, but Hurley doesn't want to walk through the jungle alone at night and decides to stay with them.

On the freighter, Lapidus comes in and tells them that the guy attacked in the jungle just died. The doctor couldn't do anything to save him. Keamy takes a key from Captain Gault and uses it to open a safe. Inside is a document Keamy says is their secondary protocol. If he is going to torch the island, it details where Benjamin Linus is heading. Gault says that wasn't the agreement it was supposed to be an extraction mission. Keamy says that's why there's a secondary protocol.

On the freighter deck, Captain Gault approaches Desmond and Sayid. He offers them a hiding spot so Keamy can't get to them, but Sayid has a counter-proposal. He wants the raft so he can ferry the survivors from the beach to the freighter. The only way to save their people is to get them off the island. Gault agrees. However, Desmond says he doesn't want to set foot on the island again, not with Penny coming. Sayid understands and speeds away.

WHOOSH to a 16 year-old John Locke in high school. He has been stuffed inside his locker, and his science teacher, Mr. Gellert, lets him out. Gellert takes John to the nurse's office to bandage a cut and tells John he has some exciting news. A Dr. Alpert from a company called Mittelos Laboratories is interested in John attending their summer camp. But John does not want to attend any sort of "science camp." He hates science. Gellert suggests that John embrace who he is and not try to be the quarterback, prom king or superhero. John yells at him, "Don't tell me what I can't do," and storms out.

WHOOOSH to the freighter where Lapidus uncuffs Michael so he can fix the engines. He asks why Michael didn't tell him was from flight 815. Lapidus was the only person who would've believed him. Michael pleads to Lapidus that he not fly Keamy back to the island or he'll kill everyone there. On their way, they pass by a room where Keamy and Omar are attaching something to Keamy's upper arm. They see Michael and Lapidus looking in and slam the door shut.

WHOOSH to adult Locke after his eight-story fall in physical rehabilitation. He's bitter, frustrated and tired, and wants to go back to his room. An orderly comes over and wheels him away. We reveal that it's Matthew Abaddon, and he tells Locke not to give up. He asks Locke if he believes in miracles, and Locke says no. Abaddon suggests Locke go on a walkabout, but Locke dismisses the idea. He can't "walkabout" anything. He's a cripple. Abaddon says he went on his own walkabout convinced he was one thing but came back another. He found out who he was. Abaddon tells Locke than when he's ready, he'll listen to the advice. And then Locke will owe him one.

WHOOSH to the freighter as Keamy's team is loading their weapons onto the helicopter. Lapidus refuses to take them. Keamy threatens to kill him, but Lapidus points out that he's their only pilot. Keamy shrugs, pulls out his knife and in one swift move slits the Doctor's throat. Keamy asks Lapidus if he's changed his mind yet. Then BANG! Captain Gault fires his gun and tells them to stand down. Keamy moves whip fast, draws his own gun, and BANG! Shoots Gault in the chest! Lapidus says okay, they're flying. Out of Keamy's sight, he slides his sat-phone into a bag, and they take off.

At the beach camp, the survivors hear a helicopter fly overhead. At first they're excited. The possibility of rescue this close. But it doesn't stop and continues inland. As it passes, something falls from it and smashes into a tent. Jack runs over and finds Lapidus' bag with the sat-phone hidden inside. Jack realizes someone wants them to follow the helicopter.

In the jungle, Hurley, Ben and Locke find the cabin. Ben tells Locke he has to go in alone. Ben's time is over. Locke enters the cabin and sees a man sitting in a chair. It's Christian Shephard, Jack's dead father. Never knowing Jack's father, Locke doesn't recognize him. Christian introduces himself, and Locke asks if he's Jacob. Christian says no but he can speak on his behalf. Christian asks if Locke knows why he's there. Locke says because he was chosen. Then he hears something and realizes there's someone else in the cabin with them. He looks over and it's Claire! What is she doing there? Claire says not to worry, she's fine. She's with Christian. But where's Aaron? Aaron is where he's supposed to be. Christian tells Locke the people from the freighter are already on their way back and these questions aren't important. Locke then asks how does he save the island? Cut to outside where Ben and Hurley wait. Locke comes out, and Ben anxiously asks what Jacob wants them to do. Locke says, "He wants us to move the island."

Life Lessons

Lately, Your Zen student/Nerd (me) been taking life lessons from Lost:

  • One persons Heaven is another person's Hell.
  • Everyone thinks they're doing the 'right' thing or what is necessary to survive.
  • It's not as simple as "black & white" who the 'good' people or 'bad' people are. (Widmore & Ben)
  • When you stop living in the present & keep trying to be someplace you aren't, people (usually yourself) end up getting hurt. Jack is an example of this. Even when he got what he wanted (rescued), he still wanted something else (to go back).
  • Those who believe that the Island is 'bad' seem to get harmed/ill in some way. Those who accept the Island as giving & loving are blessed by it.
  • You shouldn't sit around and wait for someone to rescue you if you think you're lost. Being rescued may not be the "good" thing it appears to be and usually leads to another set of problems.
  • Locke followed his own path & it led him to becoming enlightened. He is able to see & hear things others can not.
  • Metaphysical signs show themselves all the time. Some don't notice them. Some listen to them and they drive others 'crazy' (Hurley).
  • The "others" represent all people that aren't "us". We (the human race) tend to fear and mistrust other people who appear to be different from us for any reason. There are the "others" and the "other others".

Basically, I think the premise of LOST is simply just to show how people in general are just LOST in their own lives...

Which Lost Character are you?

My Results:

You're Sun. Just like the smart and dependable Sun, you are a traditionalist. You try to avoid confrontations unless they are really necessary because you prefer to let others sort out their own problems in their own time. Although you aren't one of the first to volunteer for a mission against the Others, you are the first to gather medicine and tend to the sick and wounded. Most likely, your background was very traditional, and even when you question your heritage you would never deny it.
